Some people think poverty is a bitter situation, some see it as training in patience; some people think stability and comfort is fortune, some see the trap within. As my mentor Scott Robert said “when changes is a constant, embrace it.”

WARNING, VERY LONG BORING BLOG POST from Zabrina of JeZa!! Please excuse my terrible writing.

Today is the last day of my 9-6 day job, and I want to share some of my very random maybe deep thoughts with all of you. Today I kissed my system programming job good bye and starting our photography career full time starting Jan 1st. 2011. As I packed up all my belonging from my desk and said good bye to all my colleagues whom I have been working alongside for eight years. I have many fond memories and made life long friends from this office. This was my very first job out of college and I have been working here for eight long years. I still remembered the day I was hired. My boss said to me why he wanted to interview me was not because all the accounting classes I’ve took, nor the degree I have from UC Davis, it was that he found my website on my resume portrayed great sense of humor which made me stand out from other applicants. So, because my good senses of humor, helps me landed on this job of “entry level analyst.” So I started out entry level barely knowing how to make a label with MS Word, nor add/subtract in MS Excel…. but I worked hard and taught myself in some programming languages which allows me to swim my way to become a supervisor of a small team and designed internal office apps. There are satisfactions and some fulfillment feelings toward my job, but often times day in and day out, I feel like I was doing repetitive tasks. There are many moment wondering if is this what I will be doing for the rest of my life?

This was Halloween 2005? I think. It was the best year in the office because I played an optometrist!!

I think my wake up call begins when Jeremy and I had to get married in October 2007, I started doing a lot of research on wedding planning in 2006. So, I was on Xanga – blogging about wedding planning process and stalking other wedding professionals thinking maybe I will hire them for our wedding day. One of the most popular blog at the time was Junshien’s photography blog. Then he was an aspiring photographer who is a student in UC Davis (YES! MY SCHOOL!! GO AGGIES!). I liked Junshien’s work, and because I studied “ECONOMICS” in school, I thought the most efficient way to save $$ on my wedding budget is to hire a student photographer. So I contacted Junshien but he wrote me back saying he was not available on my wedding day. He referred me his friend named Stephen Anthony aka SA Photo, Junshien told me that Stephen is also studied under international photographer Scott Robert Lim. After I checked out Stephen‘s work, I liked his imagery A LOT too! However, Stephen didn’t have very many wedding photos on his blog at that time, so I hesitated to hire him which I later regret!!!

Anyway, on Stephen‘s blog, he also talk about how he and Junshien are mentored by master photographer Scott Robert. I was thinking, WOW, who is this SCOTT ROBERT? He must be some BIG SHOT photographer since his students’ photos are phenomenal. Without a doubt, after looking at Scott Robert‘s work on his blog and his website, every single photo on his website looked stunning and it is beyond words to describe how beautiful they were. There is something about Scott’s work making an ordinary bride look extremely beautiful. I was looking at Scott’s blog everyday and dream about having him to shoot my wedding. BUT, after looking at Scott’s “INVESTMENT” section of his website for his wedding photography package, I was more sad, because I WANT HIM, but I can’t afford him. It will cost my entire wedding budget to hire Scott. I felt pain in the stomach as if a big knife went straight thru my tummy. So, with Scott Robert Wedding Photography, I could only remain as a stalker level. LOL!

As our wedding day getting close, I’ve asked couple of my friends and family members to do our wedding pictures. Honestly they worked really hard on our wedding day and we were really thankful for having them. So after the wedding we went straight to honeymoon. Jeremy and I went to Rome, Venice and Paris and we brought our first DSLR for taking honeymoon photos. We were so excited having this new camera and snapping pictures like crazy in Europe. We love the image quality on the “P” mode a lot. Thru our kit lens of the Nikon D40, the European sky seem to be more blue, clouds are whiter, and my red sweater seem to be more red (because we have camera setting with Vivid level on HIGH! LOL!). So at that time we were wondering, it would be nice to take better photos with our camera.

Our Honeymoon Pic at Rome in 2007 - Using P Mode!!

After our honeymoon, as we receive our wedding photos, there was something about our own wedding pictures doesn’t speak the same kinda of beauty as from wedding photos of what I’ve seen from Scott Robert, Stephen Ng, Junshien’s works. So even after our wedding is over, I’ve remain stalker levels to these guys on xanga/facebook because I am really attracted to their beautiful images of other people’s wedding. I was also curious of how and why these guys are able to capture ordinary wedding to be something spectacular. So, everyday I was waiting for something new and beautiful unfold on their blogs.

One day, I read Scott’s blog on their journey of adopting Chloe and Phoebe from China. I watched his video of Scott’s wife Stacey receiving Phoebe for the very first time, and how much over-flowing love expressed toward their them as children of their own. To that point I knew this is the family whom I want to be looking up to. I was touched by Phoebe’s adoption story in so many levels that I couldn’t really explain why, tears were just running down on my face. While watching that video, I thought if Chloe or Phoebe weren’t adopted by this family, what could happen to them? Could they be left abandon on street of some random village in China?!?!! Thankfully, they are in good hands of loving parents of Scott and Stacey. So reading Scott’s story which has nothing to do with photography really intrigued me into reading his blog even more faithfully, wondering what is the next inspiring story he has to share.

Scott later talked about above image he took with his Nikon Film Camera while playing Rock Paper Scissor with kids in an orphanage of China. This image was a profound moment in his photographic career because he realized his interaction with the human experience can create a powerful image. WOW, I was thinking….an amazing image is not merely back by his technical skills of the master, also back by his sensitivity to life and to powerful experiences. I was just sitting at my cube and thinking about what can I possibly do with my life? Can I live a life will have powerful stories I can tell my children like Scott Robert did?

On that powerful blog post, he concludes with the quote below and asked if anyone is interested going to China with him…….so, starting that point I was thinking I gotta do something with my bilingual skills and perhaps that was a special calling for me to help Scott so that we can do something great & amazing in China. So we’ve went to our VERY FIRST Scott Robert Workshop in Oct of 2009 in China, and our photography journey begins since.

Taken by Scott Robert Lim - Scott Robert World Tour China Stop 2009

“Extraordinary images are the result of extraordinary living. Live life and begin to see your photography in a brand new way. ” – Scott Robert Lim

Since attending our first Scott Robert Workshop, JeZa photography was born. Our life has been drastically changed since Oct of 2009; thanks to loving clients that allow us to evolve from both being weekend warriors to depart our day job slowly. Jeremy started full time shooting in August, then me starting full time in 1/1/2011. After working about one year professionally in the wedding industry, as we wrapped up 2010 with our last wedding job on December 18th, we were emotional and heart-felt about how much we’ve grown in the craft of photography. In just one year, we become better husband and wife to each other, finding our voices and true self of being photographers, and seeing the direction of where we’ll be going in the next 5 years. It all started from reading Scott Robert’s story. And thanks to being part of the Scott Robert Community, that changed our lives.

Honestly, it’s VERY UNCOMFORTABLE to think about how many weddings and photo sessions we’ll have to shoot in order to make up for the salaries, health benefits, 401K from our comfortable day jobs. To add more stress, think those bills are still due at the end of the month regardless we have income or not. I see a dark tunnel that requires me and Jeremy to endure a lot of training, trust & patience in order to walking thru this tunnel. And this journey of walking thru the tunnel is not easy, is stressful and unpredictable. But we know that through this journey will make us a stronger couple and the end of the journey itself is a process of living an extraordinary life.

To end this post, I want to share with you this poem from a Louis Vuitton ad, a luxury brand silly me used to work really hard for $$ to buy their bags for…..(a status self-comforting act at the beginning of my 9-5 career). Today I think this poem exceed any value of every LV trunk cases or bags. The poem is something so valuable yet priceless to me………..

I personally believe in digital post processing is one of the best method to lead photography into the art world in this day and age. Just like photography, digital post processing require many years of learning and experiences. A lot of people have the misconception of mastering all the technicalities in Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom will make their photos good. To me, learning all the technicalities is only a small part of in making your photograph an art form. Turning a photograph into an art piece not only to bring your vision alive in camera, you’ll need to know more than just taking a good photograph. Such as learn how light and shadow working collaboratively, know the relationship between colors, black & white , design balance, composition, what to hide and show and many more.

I”ve encounter numerous aspiring photographers in our area who are unsure of what to do with their photos after the photos are transferred onto their computer. Therefore, I would like to offer my help to who wants to learn about post-processing. It is my goal to help photographers to know when to use, what tools to use and how to use these post-processing tools to complete their vision. I will be hosting my own post-processing workshop VERY SOON, but as for now I will show you what post processing in Adobe photoshop can help enhancing Zabrina‘s shot taken in Shanghai. (PS. I choose to use Photoshop because I like the control of every single pixels. Yes I am a control Freak. )

Below is the Before and After of the Image:

( Image taken at China, Shanghai a beautiful town named Jinxi during Scott Robert X CM leung Workshop )

This is the raw before image.

To start, I’ve duplicated an extra layer of the image and use blending mode: “Multiply.”
Here I used “Level” and “Curves” to adjust the highlight and shadow as well as the color channels. Then I used “Black and White” to adjust the color red contrast. (Why use Black and White to adjust red? I will explain if you come to my upcoming workshop.)After applying some amounts of “Dodge and Burn” here is the final image after photoshop.
If you are interested in learning more on post processing to enhance your photography to the next level, please stay tune on my blog or connect me on facebook, and I will post more information about my upcoming Digital Post Processing Workshop.

Last weekend, JeZa’ve attended the Stilettos & Scott Robert – One Day Photography Workshop in San Francisco. On just one day, JeZa learned so much about the art of portraiture, posing, finding natural lights, off camera flash lights from Scott Robert Lim. The best part is, this is ONLY the FIRST lesson as part of Scott’s mentoring program; so we really look forward to complete the entire program with all our fellow classmates and can’t wait til the next class on June 11 – in the mood for love.

We just have to say wow!! Not only Scott himself being an amazing teacher, he draws this such wonderful genuine community; classmates all helpped each other to learn such as being each others voice activated light stands, shared ideas and inspirations on photography!! This such a unique community which brings strangers to become friends in just one day!! Ahhh, thank you everyone for the amazing time we had together!! Thank you Scott Robert Lim for coming all the way out here to the bay area to share the elements of “Wow”!!

We really want to share this poem with all my fellow classmates who attended the 4/10 lesson one class and this poem pretty much sums up our feelings after attending Scott’s workshop -

It is our deepest sympathy to the victims of the Jan 15th Haiti Earthquake. It’s really sad to see countless homes and lives has been lost, the entire city of Port-au-Prince has became a ruin. I am thankful for our sponsor child, who is currently residing in a rural area and many miles away from Port-au-Prince is safe from the disaster. It has been in our mind everyday thinking about what we can do to help the surviors of the quake. After many discussions and prayers, we’ve made a decision to donate 20% of all our photography proceeds to Haiti. This includes all forms of payments, deposits, intrim and final payments we will receive from clients by Feb 28th, 2010 will be going to World Vision’s Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. We will email our client our donation receipts as proof. Thank you for reading and supporting JeZa Photo.

Lastly, I would like to share this heart wrenching video from world vision with you all today.
