SONY HONG KONG: Your idea and vision on “street photography” –

JEZA: Our philosophy of street photography is simple – our friend Marcus Convson once told us we need to be “roam like a tourist and shoot like a pro,”  the reason why we should always have a powerful pocket camera with us at all time because we need to be seamless while shooting in the street and to able able to capture the decisive moment is a essential quality doing street photography.  Thus, fast lens, awesome low light performance, able to change setting fast are what we look for in the hardwares of a camera body when shooting street photography.  We have been using the SONY RX1 & RX100 with us on assignments around the world, these camera bodies has enabled us tremendously just focus on the artistry of photography because the technical is all provided with the superior well built small camera bodies.

SONY HONG KONG:  Your favourite theme or object (e.g. portrait / landscape / architecture ) – 你比較喜愛哪一類攝影題材 (e.g 人像 / 風景 / 建築 )? 為什麼?

JEZA: We are always very mesmerizes about the art of portraiture, but we believe some of the essential quality of a photographer should have does apply to all aspect of photography whether it is portrait, landscape, architecture are looking for similar things in a photograph. Beauty as the subject, mood as the lighting, emotion as the story telling.  Inspired by our grandmother’s wedding photo & the art of fashion photography, portrait photography has always been our favorite track of photography.

SONY HONG KONG:  What kind of theme or object is the most challenging? 哪一類攝影題材最具挑戰性? 你會如何處理?

JEZA: Wedding – I love wedding because I enjoy looking at the beauty of relationships between people and creating moment of an instant. A wedding is a complex event with a lot of relationships to examine, so my focus on shooting a wedding day to showcase the genuine relationship & affections between the bride & groom; also their love toward family and friends on their most important day of their lives. Perhaps that is why one of my favorite part of the wedding day is first dance, father-daughter dance & mother-son dance.  After start shooting weddings photography since 2009, we still think one of the most challenging photographic career is to be a wedding photographer. Where stress level is very high & demanding role on wedding day, we have to played multiple different roles:

a portrait photographer to quickly pose romantic shots of the bride & groom with the best light;

a family photographer to take formal pictures of lots of family members with the bride & groom;

a photojournalist to capture decisive of the ceremony & candid moments;

a food photographer to take creative shots of the appetizers, wines & food has been served;

a fashion photographer to take amazing shots of their rings, bouquet, wedding dress & shoes;

a landscape photographer to showcase the architecture of wedding venue & ambiance.

Because being a good wedding photographer we have to master all six these area of photography in a single wedding day,  even after shooting for almost 4 years we are learning and be a master at these area. Thus wedding photography in our view is most challenging track of photography to master, in our view wedding photographers should have these as essential skill sets starting out in this industry.  We constantly investing wedding photography educations such as learning from other master photographers and investing in wedding photography workshops to help us grow and improve our craft.

SONY HONG KONG: Your ideology and inspiration on photography 自己的創作理念或哲學,靈感來源?

JEZA: Our inspiration on photography came from many things. We watch lots of movies to understand the direction and the mood of lighting. One of our favorite movie is “In the Mood of Love” by Wong Kar Wai, the lighting of this movie is extremely sexy and artistic. Also read many fashion magazines such as Vogue Italia & Vanity Fair. We love the photography from Vogue Italia it is very bold, outrageous and visually stunning magazine.  Also we love strolling to museums & galleries to see paintings & photography done by old master artists, which helps us to understand why classical painting and classic photographs still look amazing against test of time.  Also we listen to various kinds of music, jazz, classical, bossa nova, even Hong Kong pop songs from the 80’s and early 90’s.  Sometimes we based a series of photos from a movie or a song, thus movie, music & classical painting they all have become a current like a river or the stream of inspirations leading to our photography concepts.

SONY HONG KONG: Please introduce 1~2 of your work,  請準備一兩張 拍攝的作品作簡單介紹

JEZA: This photo is named as the “Lonely Jet-setter.” I want to convey the life as a fashionista traveling around the world to look for things to fill her emptiness in life. Thus the very stylized & glamourous wardrobe and clothes is only on the surface looking good, but inside of her felt empty and lonely, thus but sitting in a empty seated plane all by herself but looking out the window wondering about the world out there. This photo is shot with the SONY Cybershot RX1.

As part of the Aviation Fashion Photo series, below photo is name “the Glamourous Traveller.” We’ve created this shot by mounting on the hot shoe of the SONY RX1 with a wireless remote to trigger off three flash strobes to create this look & feel with lighting.  The SONY RX1 can allow up to shutter speed of 1/800 flash sync speed and beyond, which is great for fashion photography we can use a lower f-stop in board sunlight. Also shooting with the live-view with the LCD tells me exactly what my exposure for the ambience should be. Thus, less room for technical error when shooting with a very tight schedule on location.
